THE BEST FUN AND INTERESTING HOBBIES FOR WOMEN

Hi, I’m Jen! As a mom navigating the joys (and chaos) of early parenthood, I totally get the craving for personal time and creative outlets. Before kids, I was all about crafting and creative projects, and lately, I’ve been finding my way back to the things that make me feel like me. I’ve tried a bunch of these hobbies myself (some stuck, some didn’t!) and spent way too much time researching the rest so you don’t have to. I’m just here to share what I’ve learned along the way.

The Best Fun & Interesting Hobbies for Women to Try

I feel like I'm slowly leaving the trenches of early parenthood, and I'm finding myself with a bit more free time. Emphasis on the word bit. Before kids, I loved to craft. It started from a young age. So, this year I'm looking for a new hobby or two—something to do where I can explore, learn, and be a kid myself.

I was always making something, and as I moved into early adulthood, I loved to learn new skills. I took sewing classes, learned to knit—you name it, I was open to trying it.

If you're like me, you want something new. You're craving something more, something just for you. You're ready to dive into the world of hobbies for women, and I'm here to tell you: YES, you absolutely deserve this. It's such a digital world that getting creative with our hands feels so, so good!

Whether you're looking for a great way to unwind, a new hobby to ignite your passion, or a boost for your mental health, this is your permission slip to explore. No more "I don't have time" excuses. We're going to find the perfect hobby that fits into your life, no matter how packed it is. Because let's be real, you're a dynamic woman, and you'll always be busy. So, let's find a way to make time and make it work.

Let's get down to business. We're talking about fun hobbies for women of all ages, from the young and adventurous to the wise and wonderful. This isn't just a list of hobbies; it's a guide to rediscovering yourself, finding your creative side, and prioritizing your well-being. I haven't necessarily tried every single hobby, but I created a full list after scouring the internet (aka social media)—thanks Instagram ads & Pinterest.

The Best Creative Hobbies

Let’s start with creative pursuits—the ones that let your imagination run wild and give you space to express yourself. Maybe you’ve been meaning to finally start that novel, experiment with flower arranging, or dust off your sewing machine. These kinds of hobbies are not only fun and fulfilling, but they’re also a great way to learn new skills and unwind at the end of a long day.

Creative writing is one of the easiest ways to start. Maybe you'll finally dive into that novel idea, or just dabble in short stories. It's a fantastic way to explore different perspectives and develop your problem-solving skills. If you're exploring creative writing, there are a few courses that look like a good fit:

  • Northwestern has an online program where you can get a certificate, known for its rigorous curriculum and industry-leading instructors.

  • Masterclass has a variety of courses across many creative topics.

  • I found Writing Mastery recommended in a Reddit thread.

  • Coursera is another great place to look—it feels the most middle of the road of all the choices.

Interior design is another great outlet. Transform your space into a reflection of your personal style; it doesn’t have to be a full reno. Pick a small space and start to play and design. If it feels overwhelming, I'd try a Havenly styling package to get inspiration. I've used Havenly for so many rooms to get ideas and then bring them together on my own. Their mini package is super helpful.

Makeup is an art form in itself and a great way to experiment with different techniques and express your individual style. Truthfully, makeup has never been my strong suit. I've always wanted to take a course with Rare Bird Beauties. There are a million YouTube tutorials too! Through my research for this post, I found Rare Bird Beauties is highly regarded for its beginner-friendly approach, making it a great option if you’re looking to explore this creative art form.

Jewelry making is a fun and hands-on hobby. Shrinky dink jewelry is a really easy way to start—and it’s something you could do on your own or loop in your kids if you want to make it a shared activity.

Sewing
is another classic. I actually sewed the drapes in our old condo. I’m really good with squares (ha!). Curtains and pillows, I can do. Through those sewing classes, I learned basic stitches and how to measure and cut fabric, which made simple projects feel doable. Learning to sew is such a useful skill and a great way to create unique pieces. Maybe you’ll even find yourself getting into quilting! I took in-person classes since I found it tricky to learn online. If you're in the Chicago area, I love Sew on Central and Sew Crafty Studio.

Cake decorating is another fantastic creative hobby that’s both rewarding and delicious! Whether you’re designing simple buttercream flowers or experimenting with intricate fondant shapes, it’s a sweet way to express your artistic side. Plus, you get to enjoy your masterpieces (or share them with friends and family). There are plenty of beginner-friendly kits and online tutorials to help you get started, even if you’ve never baked before.

Needlepoint has also been on my radar lately—it’s such a relaxing, satisfying hobby once you get going. I love that you can just pop on a show or podcast and stitch away. It’s slower-paced, but that’s kind of the appeal. I’ve picked up a few kits that are super beginner-friendly and actually cute below!

Puzzles & Games

For those who love a good challenge, puzzles and games are a fun way to flex your brain and unwind. These types of hobbies are perfect for sharpening your mind, building relationships, and giving yourself a break from screens (or doomscrolling… we’ve all been there).

Board games and card games are great for strategic thinking and social connection. Whether you’re playing with family, friends, or joining a local game night, they offer a fun way to bond and keep your brain active.

Jigsaw puzzles are another classic — especially if you love solo activities that feel both calming and rewarding. There’s something satisfying about seeing a picture slowly come together, one little piece at a time. Plus, puzzles are a great way to build patience and problem-solving skills without it feeling like work.

Mahjong has gotten super popular where I live, and it’s on my list to learn. It does feel like more of a time commitment right now — you typically need two to four lessons to really get the hang of it (depending on who you learn from). Also, it kind of throws me for a loop that you can only play with three other people. I’m more inclusive than that! But it looks so fun, and I love that it brings people together.

I’ve shared some of my favorite Mahjong sets and accessories below to help you get started!

Musical Hobbies

Fun fact: I took guitar lessons my senior year of college. If you’ve always wanted to play, why not learn? I have a close friend from high school whose family has regular music nights — just casually playing instruments together. I’ve always thought that was the coolest tradition. My family? We’re more of a “concert with a drink in hand” kind of crew.

Learning an instrument is such a rewarding challenge. It stretches your brain, helps you focus, and gives you a new way to express yourself—whether it’s strumming a guitar, learning piano chords, or trying out a ukulele just for fun.

Singing or creating music videos is another creative outlet. You don’t need a fancy setup—just your phone and a little inspiration. It’s a playful way to connect with music and let your personality shine.

Learning a new language can also scratch that same creative itch. If music’s not your thing but you’re still curious about sound, rhythm, and culture, language learning is a beautiful way to connect with other people and expand your world in a totally different way.

Working Out

I’ve never really thought of physical fitness as a hobby, but I guess it totally counts. For me, my physical health is just as important as my mental health, and when I don’t work out, I get cranky fast. Since I work from home, I’ve found little ways to keep moving throughout the day—even something as simple as walking on my under-desk walking pad while I answer emails makes a big difference. If you’re curious, I rounded up the best under desk walking treadmills for small spaces—these are a great option if you work from home too. It doesn’t have to be a full workout to count.

There are so many fun workouts out there that feel more like play than punishment—they get your body moving and your mood lifted.

Dance classes are a great example. You get to move, express yourself, and meet new people all at once. I recently signed up for the variety show at my daughter’s elementary school and ended up in a hip hop number. My feet haven’t moved that fast in years! It’s hard—and honestly, a great reminder of how uncomfortable it can be to try something new with new people. It gave me a whole new level of empathy for my kids when they’re nervous.

Rock climbing is another adventurous option. We don’t live in an area with outdoor climbing, so the local YMCA would be my go-to. It’s such a full-body workout—challenging but really rewarding, too.

Martial arts has gotten super popular in the last few years. I know it’s a favorite for kids where I live, but there are plenty of adult-friendly options as well. You can learn self-defense, build discipline, and boost your confidence all at once.

Horseback riding is another one of those “try it a few times” types of hobbies. It’s such a beautiful way to connect with animals and enjoy the outdoors. If you're in the Chicago area, I know there are places up north in Wisconsin that offer trail rides and beginner lessons.

Paddle tennis is one I tried a few years ago and really loved. One night a week, I’d head to lessons. I was terrible when I started, but with a little consistency, I got better! Lessons and practice helped me improve my serve and volley, and it became a super fun way to stay active. Bonus: paddle courts are heated, so you can play year-round—even in the cold.

Pilates

Pilates is one of my go-to workouts because it’s gentle but really strengthens your core and helps with flexibility. I love how it makes me feel balanced and calm, and you can do it pretty much anywhere. If you want to try it or switch things up, I’ve listed all my favorite Pilates gear below to help you out—having the right stuff definitely makes it more fun!

FAQs

  • I get it! Life is hectic. The key is to start small. Even 15-20 minutes a few times a week can make a difference. Schedule it in your calendar just like any other appointment. Look for hobbies that can be broken down into smaller chunks of time, or that can be easily integrated into your existing routine (like listening to audiobooks while commuting). The important thing is to prioritize your "me time" and make it a consistent part of your week.

  • The best way to find your perfect hobby is to experiment! Try a few different things that pique your interest. Take a free online class, borrow a book from the library, or join a local group for a trial session. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something completely new. Think about what you enjoyed as a child, or what you've always been curious about. It's all about exploration and having fun!

  • Absolutely! Hobbies are essential for your well-being. They provide a creative outlet, reduce stress, improve mental health, and can even boost your physical fitness. While work and other responsibilities are important, hobbies allow you to recharge, connect with yourself, and pursue your passions. They're not a luxury; they're a necessity for a balanced and fulfilling life. Think of them as an investment in your best self.

Social Hobbies

Ok, this is much more my scene. If you’re looking to connect with new people and expand your social circle, there are so many fun ways to do it — without forcing awkward small talk.

Book clubs are a great place to start. I joined one this past year, and I love it. We meet once every two months, and it’s totally doable. It’s such a nice way to talk about something meaningful, hear different perspectives, and build genuine friendships — all while reading books you probably wouldn’t have picked on your own.

Social clubs are another great option — whether it’s a fitness group, mom group, or just a local gathering with people who share your interests. These spaces make it easier to connect over something you already enjoy.

Wine tasting is a more relaxed and fun way to hang with friends (or meet new ones). I don’t drink as much anymore, but I’d never turn down a trip to Napa! It’s a social hobby that’s less about the wine and more about the experience.

Personal Growth Hobbies

I’ve always believed that personal growth is essential for living a fulfilling life. I’m a big self-help girlie — always reading, reflecting, and trying new things to level up. This kind of hobby is less about what you do for fun and more about what you want to accomplish in life… and then making a plan to get there.

Online courses are a great starting point. They make it easy to learn a new skill, explore different ideas, and expand your knowledge from anywhere. Whether you’re diving into personal finance, learning a new language, coding, or just exploring something that sparks your curiosity, there’s likely a course (or blog!) that can help.

Don’t underestimate the power of paying for an hour of someone’s time—a coach, consultant, or expert in the field you want to explore. Sometimes you can shortcut your way through the messy middle by learning directly from someone who’s already done it.

Blogging started as a personal outlet for me—and over time, it turned into a business, between my own blog and my consulting work. It’s a great example of a hobby that helped me grow in more ways than I expected.

Nature Hobbies

Bird watching is peaceful and surprisingly rewarding—all you need is a quiet spot and a bit of patience to start noticing the world around you in a new way.

Gardening has become one of my favorite ways to spend time outside. Vegetable gardens are a great way to grow your own food and enjoy the outdoors. If you’re new to it, I put together a step-by-step guide on how to start a garden that breaks it down for beginners.

Flower arranging is one of those hobbies that feels both meditative and creative. I love growing flowers and using them as hostess gifts or little surprises for friends—it’s such a sweet way to share a hobby with others.

Indoor plants are a great way to get started if gardening feels overwhelming. Even a small herb garden tower can be a simple, satisfying way to bring more greenery into your day. It doesn’t take much space, but it still gives you that same sense of care and connection.

Cooking classes

Cooking classes are a fun and low-pressure way to learn new skills. Sur La Table has great options if you're just getting started—I took my mom last year for Mother’s Day, and we had the best time. I’d absolutely go back! It’s also a great activity to do with girlfriends or your partner. Check your local area too—you might be surprised at what’s just a few hours away.

So, girlfriend, what are you waiting for? Go out there and explore the world of hobbies for women. Find your passion, unleash your creativity, and prioritize your well-being. You deserve it!  And remember, this isn't just about finding a new hobby; it's about finding yourself. It's about living your best life. Now go get 'em!
