Why is it that moving always takes so much more out of you than you expect? I blocked my calendar with high hopes of being “box-free” by the end of this week, and somehow I’m still surrounded by boxes? This week the feeling of overwhelm started to hit me slightly as I’m 31 weeks pregnant with maternity leave on the horizon, there’s stuff everywhere and the holidays are around the corner. I know, I know, deep breaths. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but in true ‘Jen Naye fashion,’ I thought I’d have the Herrmannito House built in a week 😉
What happened this week:
Last Friday, we moved in. All was relatively seamless. Since we stored our furniture for so long, we had two sets of movers. Our belongings in storage were stored with Makespace, and our belongings from my parents house were moved by The Professionals. The Professionals were *seamless,* and I cannot recommend them enough. I shared a post about it here.
Unfortunately, and I’m truly shocked by this, Makespace was awful. I’ve worked with them on our last 5 (or more?) moves and it’s always been perfect. On time, 0 damage and a friendly team. Well, this move was breathtaking. We have roughly $4,000 in damage to our furniture. They actually damaged more than they didn’t. I can’t believe it. So now, we’ll need to create a big claim to track everything and hopefully seek reimbursement.
I had already sold most of our furniture so having the rest of it chipped or shattered is certainly not ideal. Luckily (so far), we haven’t lost anything of sentimental value other than our Dyson fan. It sounds silly, but Matt and I met when we were working at Dyson and got that fan when we first started dating. However, I still haven’t gone through the Christmas ornaments yet… ugh.
What is more frustrating is everything that’s chipped or shattered is from what they packed. I packed about 40 boxes for the kitchen and lost 1 basic glass florist vase. All of my entertaining plates, endless wine glasses, etc. made it just fine. It brings up more thoughts for me, too, as it’s a company I’ve strongly recommended in the past, so I’ll be sharing more as the process continues.
On a lighter note, Matt and I both had Monday off so instead of unpacking boxes, we played hookey and grabbed lunch outside and went for a long walk. He and I have spent the last 3 or so years working so hard to build businesses, redo homes, etc. that we don’t stop to smell the roses as much as we should. We’re making a conscious effort to do so and slow down a bit.
Also, Emmie is thriving, which is so good to see! She’s loving the house, being with her cousin for a nanny share. We even got our first beach picnic in!
What’s on my mind:
Getting settled, finalizing my Q4 and early Q1 plans and baby are all on my mind. This week we didn’t have a sense of routine, which I’m really craving. I’m hoping that this week will have a bit more normalcy. I’m ready to be more settled and wind down at the end of the day.
Also, whoa 31 weeks hit a bit hard. I’m really starting to feel this pregnancy by the end of the day and my first trimester tiredness is back. I’m off all caffeine since my heart palpitations had ramped up, and I know that’s a factor, too.
What we’re working on:
We’re working on finalizing one more project for Q4, and then it’s been very focused on internal projects. Jessie is so much better at setting aside client work than I am.
I personally have a goals workshop that I want to launch over the next few weeks and work 1×1 with some people. It feels like 2022 is going to be the year that we establish a normal baseline again, and I’d love to help people get settled. If you’re one of them, feel free to email me – email@example.com.
What I’m looking forward to:
I’m looking forward to no boxes and a submitted Makespace claim, HA! Honestly, that’s what’s on the top of my mind right now because we have SO MUCH DAMAGE. I also have some really fun brand partnerships in the works that I can’t wait to share with you all, AND we’re hiring someone new to help at The Marketing Greenhouse while I’m out on maternity leave. I’m very excited for that, too!
Until next week…
