When we bought our home, we knew our renovation would be focused on creating a kitchen-centered heart of the home.
As many families do, we live in the kitchen and food is not just sustenance, but rather an experience. We love spending time together at the day’s end, creating meals, tag-teaming efforts (my husband, Adam, is an excellent dish washer 😉 ) or simply gathering over leftovers to exchange stories.
Unfortunately, prior to our renovation, the layout of our home didn’t support this lifestyle. The limited counter space made it hard to simultaneously tag-team duties. This created more of a “tag out” type of evening with one person on kid duty while the other person worked in the kitchen, switching spaces as needed.
We didn’t like how the layout of the house forced this physical separation.
As a result, we decided to take out the wall that separated the kitchen from the adjacent room (a master bedroom for the prior owners and a “collection/junk” room for us) to really open up the space.
The intention would be to expand the kitchen while creating a space where our family could coexist in the evenings as we wound down our days.
Below are some of the designs that have inspired this transformation.
The Heart of the Home
These dreamy living room/kitchen combos are exactly what I had in mind for a heart of the home. This setup not only suits our lifestyle, but it will also provide a great space for entertaining guests.
Because I love spending time in the kitchen, I wanted a space that was bright, open and inviting. To help brighten up the space, I knew I wanted white cabinets with a lighter counter top. However, I’m loving the character and color contrast that comes from adding an accent island and colorful runner.
The Painted Beams
The wall that separated our kitchen from the adjacent room was load bearing, so in its place we had to insert an industrial beam to carry the weight of the home. We loved the raw look of it and the character that it added to the ceiling. Now our debate is, what color do we paint it?!
As we finalize all these design elements, check back in a few weeks as I reveal our new heart of the home!
