There is no place more festive and merry than Prague during Christmas. Prague is a special European city, I’m not sure if it’s the architecture, the colors, or the fact that Prague has a castle on a hill — but it’s a city that has stepped out of the pages of a fairytale. I had the chance to visit a few years ago while on a work trip and explored this gorgeous city in Christmas splendor.
Many Americans love Christmas markets – but if you ever get the chance to go to one in Europe — go. It’s where they started and they are so beautiful and festive!
Prague Christmas Market
There are many beautiful sites to visit, but in December the place to be is the Christmas market. Set in the Old Town Square, the market is an establishment of small wooden huts selling items like
- Handcrafted ornaments
- Amber jewelry
- Bohemian glass
In December, aside from the ever present Old Town Hall and Týn Church, the square is dominated by a large sparkling Christmas tree. Back home large trees like this are usually made up of smaller ones strategically placed atop one another. But upon close inspection, I found out that this is actually one massive tree.
Of course, the sites to see in Prague are not just located in Old Town Square. While there, in between work and meetings, and despite the chilly cold, I made a point to explore Charles Bridge, the Prague Castle, and St. Vitus Cathedral. All were festive places ready to celebrate Christmas – but none compared to the Christmas cheer thriving in the square.
Have you visited Prague in Christmas? Where are you favorite Christmas markets?
